The year is still young as we are still in early April. However, the number of beefs and social media spats between prominent celebs in Nigeria has been crazy so far. In this write up I personally wrote, I put together some of the most interesting beefs of 2016.
Olamide Vs Don Jazzy
The year 2016 started with a big bang on January 1, 2016 when popular musician, Olamide, slammed Mavin boss, Don Jazzy, after an incident at the Headies awards. Olamide had been upset that his protégé, Lil Kesh, was denied the Next Rated artist award which was given to Reekado Banks who is under Don Jazzy’s Label. Olamide took to the stage to blast the Headies with his ‘Everything was a hit, back to back’ speech and Don Jazzy also slammed him back. Olamide then took to his Twitter handle to write: Don Jazzy is a bastard and launched the #leave trash for LAWMA. Their beef was however resolved a week later
Davido Vs Dele Momodu/Sophie
Another beef which dominated social media for several days was the one between singer Davido, and Ovation boss, Dele Momodu and his niece, Sophie Momodu. Davido and Sophie were lovers and had a child together. However, following allegations that traces of marijuana were found in the blood of their baby, Imade, through breastfeeding, the baby was collected from Sophie and handed over to Davido’s father. Davido’s father and sister attempted to take the baby to Dubai without the consent of Sophie and Dele Momodu then stepped in. At the airport, the Ovation publisher involved the immigration officers and tweeted a photo of the Davido family being prevented from travelling. Suddenly, all hell was let loose. Davido took to Twitter to blast Dele Momodu and his ex-lover repeatedly calling them all sorts of names. Dele Momodu also fired shots back. The matter was then dragged to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) which helped the family to resolve the matter.
Blackface VS Tuface
While the media space was still recovering from the Davido saga, ex-Planthashun star, Blackface, took to his Twitter handle to call out his ex-band member, Tuface, where he accused Tubaba of stealing his songs. On January 25, 2016 Blackface in a series tweets lashed out at 2face and his manager, Efe Omorogbe, accusing them of stealing his intellectual property and even threatened to take them to court. Not long after, 2face responded to him describing the statements by Blackface as ‘unfortunate’. Omorogbe then went on social media to blast Blackface. Their beef was resolved last week.
Dammy Krane VS Wizkid
On a bright morning on January 12, musician Dammy Krane decided to make headlines and so he took to his Twitter handle to blast Wizkid and accuse him of stealing his songs. Dammy Krane who is a protégé of Tuface, wrote, “Wizkid is a bitch nigga. I was about to lose it and fuck him up but they even had to beg me, no time to form I am the streets. This industry nigga has been trying it for a while. Stole a couple of my stuff but I didn’t talk.” Three days later, however, 2Baba, who was called to split up the fight, posted a photo of the two musicians and Quilox nightclub owner Shina Peller at the club and captioned it, “All we need is one love #inmyvoice“, referring to his song One Love, released in 2013. Industry insiders, however, believe the beef was a publicity stunt
Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi Vs the Olumofin brothers
Popular OAP, Toolz Oniru was getting ready for her wedding to Capt. Tunde Demuren and had told her bestie, and fellow OAP, Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, about how some two brothers who are party crashers had been disturbing her fiancé for invitation cards. Gbemi then took to her Twitter handle where she mocked the two brothers without mentioning their names. However, the two brothers, Joro and Dokun Olumofin, who are known for gate crashing every social event in Lagos, took to social media where they gave poor Gbemi the bashing of her life. The brothers then launched #find Gbemi a bae, alluding to the fact that Gbemi who is about 32, has no boyfriend or husband. The beef phased out but never really ended.
P Square Vs P Square
The twin brothers, Paul and Peter Okoye, took their family to social media after they announced that they had separated. Paul then recorded a song where he reported his twin brother to their mother and the fight that they had. Peter then granted Net.ng an interview where he said the problem was a managerial one. He said their brother, Jude, was not managing the group well and he and his brother would not separate but would only have different managers. The topic trended for days as two obsessed female fans recorded videos of themselves crying and begging the boys to reconcile. The matter was later resolved as the brothers have attended two shows together. Industry insiders, however, believe the feud was a publicity stunt.
Linda Ikeji VS Wizkid
Arguably the most trending topic today is the beef between popular blogger, Linda Ikeji, and singer Wizkid. There had always been a cold war between the two but the beef reached a climax on Sunday. Linda had on Saturday published a story where she claimed that Wizkid had received a quit notice from his landlord to vacate his Lekki residence within 10 days. However, Wizkid then took to Linda’s Instagram page where he called her all manner of names. The musician claimed one of his directors used to sleep with her. He said Linda was a sad woman and comes from a family of failures. He said at 25 he had achieved what Linda couldn’t and accused her of beefing him. Linda responded by calling Wizkid a child. She said even his car was bought on credit and told him to stop lying about his age.
