Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has abolished the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Every last Saturday of each month is dedicated to a mandatory clean up of Lagos; the nation’s commercial capital. Shops and businesses are often shut from 7am to 10am and vehicular movement ceases for the period.
A statement made available by the state Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Adejare, during the ministry’s monthly media chat in Lagos on Thursday, has said the monthly exercise will be jettisoned because of its cost to the state’s economy.
The commissioner disclosed that the state governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has decided that the state cannot afford to shut down a mega city like Lagos for a period of 3 hours.
Mr. Adejare noted that environmental sanitation should rather be a daily exercise and charged residents to make it a way of life.
The commissioner also vowed that the state will shut down markets violating the state’s environmental laws.
